About the Project

A personal, app prototype project intended to challenge and expand my skills in mobile design and Figma. By the Pound is designed to seamlessly connect local shrimpers and seafood buyers across Louisiana. By providing a centralized platform for real-time listings, location-based searches, and direct communication, the app supports local fisheries and boosts the state's coastal economy.

Design & Developement

The app was designed using Figma, allowing for efficient collaboration and iteration throughout the design phase. The project followed a structured UX/UI design process to ensure the final product is both user-centered and scalable.

Key Steps in the Design Process:

  • User Personas: Research was conducted to create detailed user personas representing both shrimpers and buyers. This helped in understanding pain points, behaviors, and motivations, ensuring the app would serve real needs effectively.
  • User Flows: Clear user flows were mapped out to define how users would navigate through key tasks—such as posting seafood listings, browsing available catches, and initiating purchases. These flows informed layout and interaction decisions.
  • Design System: A consistent and scalable design system was established early in the process. This included a cohesive set of components, color palettes inspired by Louisiana’s coastal culture, and typography guidelines to maintain a clean, approachable interface.
  • Low-Fidelity Wireframes: Before moving into high-fidelity screens, low-fidelity mockups were created to iterate on layout and functionality quickly. These wireframes focused on structure and usability without getting distracted by visuals too early in the process.

What I Learned

Through this project, I gained valuable experience in the end-to-end process of designing a user-centered mobile application. One of the key takeaways was learning how to build a full design system—including consistent typography, color palettes, components, and spacing rules—which allowed me to create a cohesive look throughout the app.

I also deepened my understanding of app design, from early wire-framing to user interface considerations and interaction patterns. I learned how to prioritize usability and accessibility while still maintaining a visually engaging experience.

Additionally, I explored the importance of user research and persona development. By interviewing and analyzing the needs of both seafood buyers and local shrimpers, I was able to define accurate user personas that shaped the overall product direction and informed critical design decisions.
